About the Malibu Film Foundation:

Malibu Film Foundation a non-profit public charity established in 1997 that currently produces both Malibu International Film Festival ® and Santa Monica International Film Festival ®. In addition, Malibu Film Foundation provides grants and resources to underserved filmmakers and artists in the community through various programs.

Malibu Film Foundation has recently received a generous in-kind donation in the form of a multi-year lease of a retail space in a Malibu Shopping Center to be used as the foundation headquarters and creative space. The Foundation is currently developing a capital campaign to be implemented and managed by the Director of Development.

Malibu International Film Festival ® is a premier showcase for U.S. and international independent film, held each awards season in and around Malibu, CA. Malibu Film Festival screens new, innovative and compelling films and provides programming that values quality filmmakers and significantly highlights Malibu local emerging and established talent. Malibu Film Festival is widely recognized as a key stop in the awards season race.

Santa Monica International Film Festival ® is a premier showcase for U.S. and international independent film, held annually in and around Santa Monica, CA. SMFF screens new, innovative and compelling films and provides programming that values quality filmmakers and significantly highlights local underserved talent in competition with regional, national and international filmmakers.

 

Opportunity Overview:

The Director of Development will be a fundraising expert with extensive development experience, preferably in the arts or festival arenas. A key member of the Malibu Film Foundation team, he or she will implement capital campaigns, and on an ongoing basis will spearhead the generation of funds to support the Foundations’ operations, as well as the mission of providing ongoing educational opportunities and their acclaimed year- round film production program and communication with board members, donors and friends of Malibu Film Foundation. This will include donations from individuals, grants, and sponsorship opportunities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Working as part of a small, collaborative team, the Director of Development serves a critical role in managing the operations of the Malibu Film Foundation’s capital campaigns and helping assure the foundation maintains strong relationships with its board members, donors and staff.

  •  Develop and implement a calendar of strategic fundraising initiatives and collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement short- and long-term fundraising strategies including capital campaigns, subscription membership drives, board membership drive, other.

  •  The Director of Development is the Foundation’s main fundraiser, and as such will spend considerable time personally soliciting donors.

  •  Spearhead the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospective donors, as well as special event cultivation.

  •  Research, write, and edit a range of materials, including foundation/government grants and stewardship reports, and report on progress to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

  •  Creation of high-quality communication and marketing materials in conjunction with fundraising/campaign initiatives.

  •  Ensure all external messaging is consistent and appropriate to donors, the filmmaking community, film enthusiasts, festival attendees, and residents of Malibu and Santa Monica and the surrounding areas.

  •  Maintain accurate and thorough donor records.

 

The Ideal Candidate:

 

  •  BA or BS degree required; advanced degree a plus.

  •  Passion for the arts, particularly filmmaking.

  •  A minimum of five years of fundraising/advancement experience at a nonprofit,

    with preference for experience in the arts/festival world.

  •  Campaign management experience.

  •  Marketing/communications experience.

  •  Advanced technology skills.

  •  Outstanding writing skills.

  •  Adept at managing multiple projects.

  •  Volunteer management experience.

  •  Strong relationship-building and solicitation skills are important.

  •  Experience working with board members.

  •  Experience managing membership drives.

  •  Experience with board development.

  •  Lives in Malibu, CA.

Working Environment:

  •  The Director of Development will work in general office conditions.

  •  Given the nature of the position, events and meetings will require some evening

    and weekend hours, with greater frequency during festival season.

  •  Please note that relocation is not available for this role.

  •  The selected candidate will be required to submit information for a background

    check.
